The Equality Illinois Political Action Committee, a branch of Chicago-based LGBT rights advocacy organization Equality Illinois, announced its endorsements for candidates in state and local legislative races Friday, listing candidates who have indicated strong support for LGBT issues leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

The new endorsements included legislators who have been longtime advocates of LGBT rights in Springfield like Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) and Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) as well as newcomers throughout the state. Candidates were chosen based on their answers to the PAC’s survey, interviews, community input and previous voting records, according to a media release.

The PAC scoured races from all of the state to find the candidates most attuned and supportive of LGBT issues like marriage equality and emphasized the importance of voting “down ballot,” or in races other than the U.S. presidential election, because local legislators have the “most direct impact” on statewide LGBT issues, according to the release.
