News reporting is at the core of our mission at Chicago Phoenix. As we continue to grow and expand our coverage, we’ll need a large, diverse and dedicated team of reporters to tackle stories throughout the city and region. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Journalism and hands-on reporting experience in Chicago or nearby. With that said, a firm grasp on AP Style, journalistic ethics, multimedia and alignment with our social media strategy are extremely important. A strong understanding of the local LGBT community, politics, relevant organizations, culture and activism are significant advantages as well. General assignment reporters will work closely with the Editor-in-chief on a per-story basis and have opportunity to grow in their positions as the publication continues to grow. Depending on the enterprising nature of the reporter, the position would entail roughly 10 – 25 hours/week.

To apply, please send a cover letter, resume and 3-5 clips to Tony Merevick, editor-in-chief at

In the same sense as news reporting, we believe that covering the massive LGBT community in Chicago with photos and video is at the core of our mission. As we have seen over the last few months, some stories are better told through photos. For example, an LGBT march with a small turnout may be told with numbers and quotes, but without photography, the passion displayed by the small contingent is at risk of going overlooked. It is also important to display the people, colors, culture, diversity and challenges within the community. An ideal photojournalist will be enterprising in that regard and will seek stories and events to cover. They will also have a speedy turnaround and will deliver images in a timely manner to be included in coverage. Similar to a general assignment reporter, there is a lot of opportunity for expansion of this role and growth as the publication continues to grow. This role would involve anywhere from 5 hours to 15 hours of work per week.

Just like the editorial side of Chicago Phoenix, the business and advertising side of the publication is rapidly expanding. Advertising sales representatives are needed to make valuable connections and deals with local businesses throughout the region, showcasing the value of the publication and its audience. Each representative will work with the advertising sales president and will become part of a passionate team of brand berserkers. The best applicants will be goal-oriented, excited to learn more about the publication and its mission, ready to dive into the fast-paced environment of a media startup, and will be dedicated to maximizing business opportunities all the time. Responsibilities will be determined by the advertising president, but will mostly entail calling potential clients and delivering analytical data to current clients while maintaining ongoing relationships. This is a part-time role; 20-30 hours per week.
